About me
I'm a digital strategist and transformation leader specialising in creating clarity from complexity.
For nearly two decades, I've helped organisations - from government bodies to international NGOs to commercial enterprises - navigate ambiguous challenges, re-imagine customer and user experience, and build the capability to sustain change.
I combine strategic vision with hands-on delivery across service design, user experience, discovery research, and organisational change. Organisations hire me when they need someone who can lead with empathy and navigate complexity, while delivering tangible results.
My background
My career began in-house, leading digital projects for organisations like Butlins, Mothercare, Action for Children, and MSI Reproductive Choices. I moved agency-side to Joyful to broaden my impact, facilitating strategy workshops and helping hundreds of organisations to transform their digital services. During my time here I helped design an AI-driven website building tool, the success of which led to the company’s acquisition by one of the UK’s biggest tech companies, The Access Group.
In 2020, I founded my own consultancy practice, focusing on the work I do best: deep discovery research that surfaces root causes and strategic planning that delivers a clear roadmap for success.
Recent work includes modernising newsroom operations for News UK, redesigning service delivery and customer experience for Surrey County Council, leading UX transformation across multiple countries for MSI Reproductive Choices, and conducting discovery research for healthcare platforms and public services. I also work as an associate consultant with digital agencies, bringing discovery and strategic expertise to their client portfolio.

My values
What drives me is solving problems that matter: I gravitate towards work in healthcare, government, international development, and social impact where digital transformation genuinely improves people's lives. I'm particularly passionate about building more inclusive digital cultures. I mentor women in tech, speak about equity in the sector, and serve as a Digital Trustee for International Broadcasting Trust, advising on AI strategy and digital risk.
I work with organisations that are open to change, value evidence-based decisions, and want to build internal capability - not just hire consultants forever. If you're facing complex challenges and need someone who can cut through ambiguity to deliver clear strategic direction, let's talk.
How I work
No matter the organisation or the complexity of the challenge, these are the principles I apply to my work:
Start with discovery. I spend time understanding your organisation, your audiences, the processes, challenges, opportunities, and where you fit within the bigger picture. Discovery research reveals what's really happening, giving you a solid foundation to make informed decisions.
Design with people. I conduct co-design workshops, user testing, observations and stakeholder engagement - making people feel part of your journey is what drives successful transformation.
Build capability. I document processes, deliver training webinars, and create frameworks that teams can use independently. The goal is to leave you stronger and more capable, not reliant on consultants.
Confident collaboration. I’m comfortable working autonomously and engaging directly with senior leadership and frontline teams. I work with leadership to embed change, creating the conditions and cultures for sustainable transformation.
Phased delivery, tangible recommendations. I specialise in providing tangible recommendations that drive action, rather than just gather dust on a shelf. Quick wins help build momentum and allow you to see if what you’re doing is working. For bigger projects I often take a phased approach with manageable and practical next steps, helping your teams learn and adapt.
Client testimonials
“As a marketing team, it’s easy to become so close to your own website that it's hard to spot the opportunities to improve performance. Mel brought an objective perspective and quickly identified practical, incremental changes that had meaningful impact. Her recommendations were clear and easy to follow, with actions we could implement at our own pace.
The uplift in our metrics speaks for itself but the biggest shift is how we now think about the site - it’s no longer a static asset, it’s a strategic priority that’s constantly evolving.”
— Gemma Skelley, Head of Marketing at DTP Group“Mel consulted for us across 2024 and 2025 and was a huge support for us in redesigning our country websites for a better user experience and upskilling our teams on digital skills in a changing world! She worked effectively with limited oversight required and I could always trust her to deliver a high quality result.”
— Jennifer Gassner, Marketing & Innovation Director at MSI Reproductive Choices“Mel is one of the most talented digital experts we work with. She helps us with a wide range of roles in the team including, but not limited to, user experience research & design, content strategy, product management and digital strategy.
She has a deep knowledge of digital health products and services, but has contributed to many different sectors that we work in. She is a joy to work with and adds an enormous amount to any team that she is a part of.”
